Project Title: Frankford Arsenal Area II Remediation Project Location: City of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Project Sponsor: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Balimore District Client: Arcadis U.S., Inc. & PIKA International, Inc., AJV
Amy Greene Environmental (AGE) was contracted by Arcadis U.S., Inc. (Arcadis) and PIKA International, Inc. team to provide arborist services for Frankford Arsenal Area II Remediation in Philadelphia.
The remedial action is comprised of excavation of lead contaminated soil at AOC 1 (consisting of AOCs 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D) and 10, and polychlorinated biphenyl contaminated soil at AOC 6. The planned remediation work involves manually removing the contaminated soil, disposing of it off-site, and replacing the soil with clean fill.
Amy Greene Environmental. provided an ISA Certified Arborist to inventory, appraise, and evaluate existing trees in the remediation area, develop a tree protection plan in an effort to preserve existing trees, specify protocol for minimizing root damage, and provide oversight during soil remediation activities in the vicinity of trees to monitor the implementation of tree protection measures.
Removal of contaminated soil around existing trees has the potential for tree damage and mortality due to soil compaction, the severing or desiccation of roots, loss of entire tree structural stability, and major injuries to bark, trunk, and limbs. Prior to removal of contaminated soil, AGE performed an inventory and evaluation of the existing trees at the project site including species, location, condition and replacement value of each tree. Through discussion with project team and property owner, a small number of trees were selected for removal based on condition, cost of preservation, and logistics of excavation requirements. The completed tree inventory included 105 trees, most of them located within AOC 1A. Approximately 70 of the trees were located within or directly adjacent to proposed soil excavation areas with the remaining trees still within the area of impact due to the wide reach of tree roots and the equipment access areas. AGE developed protocols for remediation of soil in the vicinity of the trees to be preserved which included air spade soil excavation, vacuuming of the excavated soil and replacement with suitable soil.
